Pressure washer repair, and why the pump usually decides

A pressure washer is two machines fastened together. The engine has a dealer network you can look up; the pump often does not, and the pump is usually what failed.

Two manufacturers, one machine

On a petrol pressure washer the engine is usually a Briggs & Stratton or a Honda, and the pump is usually made by somebody else again and fitted by whoever assembled the machine. The name on the box, the name on the engine shroud and the name cast into the pump are frequently three different companies.

That is why an authorized-dealer lookup only half answers the question. Briggs & Stratton bundles pressure washers and generators into a single authorization line — the one its locator calls Portable — so a dealer confirmed for one of the two is confirmed for the engine on both. Nothing in that says the shop can rebuild your pump.

When you call, say which half is misbehaving. An engine that will not start and a machine that starts fine but will not build pressure are two different jobs with two different answers.

What each half fails at

The engine fails the way every small engine fails: fuel left standing over a winter, a gummed carburettor, a fouled plug. Cheap, common, fixable by any competent bench, and covered by the engine maker's dealer if the machine is young enough to be under warranty.

The pump fails at seals and valves, and it fails faster when the machine has been run dry, run with the trigger closed for long periods, or left to freeze with water in it. A frozen pump is the one that usually ends the machine: water expands, and what it cracks is a casting rather than a seal.

Low or pulsing pressure with a healthy engine is nearly always in the pump or the nozzle rather than anywhere expensive. Ask the shop to check the nozzle and the inlet filter before anything comes apart.

Repair or replace

On consumer machines the pump is often sold as a sealed assembly rather than as parts, which sets the economics: if the pump has gone, the repair is the price of a new pump plus fitting, and that is compared against a new machine with a warranty on both halves.

Engine work is the other way round. A carburettor clean or replacement on a sound machine is worth doing at almost any age, and it is the repair most of these machines actually need.

Before winter, run the pump dry or put pump antifreeze through it. It is the single maintenance step that decides whether the machine survives to next spring, and it costs less than the bench fee for looking at a cracked one.

What to ask before you book

Whether the shop is an authorized dealer for the engine brand — for Briggs that means the Portable line specifically. Whether it services pumps at all, or engines only. What the diagnosis costs.

Take the model number off the machine and the model and type numbers off the engine. They are two different lookups and a shop will want both.
