Small Engine Repair Finder

Authorized Briggs & Stratton dealers, and why the product line decides

Briggs & Stratton makes engines, not machines, so being an authorized Briggs dealer says something quite specific — and something narrower than it looks.

This is an independent directory. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Briggs & Stratton, and nothing on this page is written or approved by Briggs & Stratton.

An engine brand is not a machine brand

The engine on a mower and the mower are usually made by different companies. A Briggs & Stratton engine turns up under a dozen equipment badges, and the dealer network that services the engine is not the same list as the dealer network that services the machine it is bolted to.

That matters when something fails. A carburettor, a coil or a valve adjustment is engine work and goes to a Briggs dealer. A deck, a spindle, a transmission or a chassis part is machine work and goes to the equipment brand's dealer. When you call, say which of the two has failed if you know — it is the fastest way to find out whether you are talking to the right shop.

Authorization comes with a product line attached

Briggs is the only manufacturer in this directory whose dealer list publishes what a dealer is authorized for, in its own words: Lawn and Garden, Snow Products, Portable, which covers pressure washers and generators together, and a Commercial Product Line. A shop can hold one and not the others.

So a dealer confirmed for Snow Products is confirmed for the engine on your snowblower, and that is all it says. It is not a statement about your mower. This directory records the lines each dealer holds and works out what a shop can fix from them rather than flattening it to Briggs, yes or no.

Briggs also lists dealers separately for its own equipment brands — Simplicity, Snapper, Ferris, Billy Goat and Murray — under their own designations. A shop on one of those lists is on it for that brand.

What the tier names mean, which is not what circulates

The Briggs & Stratton dealer locator ranks Elite Dealers to the top of the results and tags them in its own page markup as sponsored, so the order you are reading there is not distance and not rating. That is worth knowing before you take the first result as the nearest one.

No page on the Briggs site defines any of the designations above. There is no dealer-programme page and no criteria list, so we print the names and no gloss.

Two corrections, both checkable: Briggs publishes no Platinum and no Gold dealer tier. Neither string appears anywhere in its live dealer records or its locator. A separate Elite programme does exist for energy-storage installers, which is a different business from small engine repair and should not be read across.

Before you carry it in

Ask whether the shop is authorized for the Briggs line your machine belongs to, and give it the model and type numbers off the engine shroud rather than the name on the mower deck. Those two numbers are how a Briggs dealer looks up every part on the engine.

Ask whether the repair is an engine job or a machine job before you agree to it. A shop that can do only one half will usually tell you plainly, and that answer saves a second trip.
