Authorized STIHL dealers, and the badge you cannot see on the card

STIHL lets you filter its dealer locator to Elite Dealers and never says what one is. That gap is worth understanding before you read anybody else's explanation of it.

This is an independent directory. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by STIHL, and nothing on this page is written or approved by STIHL.

What authorized buys you at a STIHL dealer

STIHL sells and services through a dealer network rather than through a repair trade at large, and warranty work goes to a dealer STIHL has authorized. Any competent shop can put a chain on a saw. Only an authorized one can put a warranty coil on it and not charge you.

STIHL says it has a network of more than 10,000 local authorized dealers in the United States, which means the question is almost never whether one is near you. It is which of the several near you will take a machine in this week.

The Elite Dealer badge, and why this page does not explain it

STIHL publishes the name Elite Dealers as a filter on its own locator and defines it on no STIHL-owned page — its own result cards do not even show the badge, so the only way to see who holds it is to switch the filter on and watch the list get shorter. There is no legend, no tooltip and no criteria page anywhere on stihlusa.com.

So we report the name and stop. Any description of what an Elite Dealer has to do to become one that you find online is written by a dealer or by somebody quoting a dealer, not by STIHL. It may well be accurate. It is not the manufacturer's statement, and this site does not repeat it as though it were.

The one thing the filter does tell you is real and useful: it is a shorter list, drawn by STIHL, of dealers STIHL has picked out. Treat it as a starting point rather than as a grade.

What a STIHL servicing dealer handles

STIHL's range is chainsaws, trimmers and blowers, and more recently zero-turn mowers. It is a narrower catalogue than the full-line brands, and that narrowness is the useful part: a STIHL dealer is a saw shop by trade, and the bench that sees a hundred saws a season is the bench you want a saw on.

It also sets a limit. STIHL makes no snowblower and no pressure washer, so a STIHL authorization tells you nothing at all about those machines — a shop may well fix them, but it will be on some other footing.

Checking a shop yourself

STIHL's locator needs JavaScript, so it will not open in a text browser or a locked-down work laptop. When it does open, the Premium Services group holds the Elite filter; leave it off first to see every authorized dealer near you, then switch it on to see which of them STIHL has marked.

STIHL also runs a page for reporting fraudulent sellers. It is worth knowing what that page is about and what it is not: it targets counterfeit product sold online by people posing as dealers, not shops that repair STIHL equipment.

Before you carry it in

Ask whether the shop does STIHL warranty work, and ask it as a separate question from whether it sells STIHL — the two are not the same authorization and a shop can hold one without the other.

For a saw, ask what a chain and bar cost fitted while it is in. That is the repair most saws actually need, it is cheap, and a shop that quotes it straight away over the phone is a shop with a saw bench rather than a saw shelf.

The designations, and who defines them

Elite Dealers

Published in a filter chip in the Premium Services group on the STIHL USA dealer locator, which STIHL's own page markup calls a badge.

STIHL publishes no definition of this designation on any page it owns, so this site does not supply one.

Full Line Dealers

Published in the STIHL USA page for businesses applying to become a dealer.

STIHL publishes no definition of this designation on any page it owns, so this site does not supply one.

Where to find an authorized dealer

No metro area on this site yet holds 5 shops STIHL has confirmed as authorized dealers, so none has a page of its own. The metro list on the home page is the place to start meanwhile, and this list fills itself in as the directory grows.
